Certain areas in Panama should be avoided because of Security reasons. Smugglers, bandits, Colombian guerrillas and paramilitary forces are very common in these areas. Places such as Darién Province from the Columbian border along the Tuira River to Yaviza come under this category. Darién National Park is okay, but do take a travel guide with you or stay away from it altogether. Another area to avoid is the Madden Dam in Charge National Park for the same reasons.
